The Story of Hodges
or THE LEGEND OF THE CAT AND THE COFFEE BEAN
Dr. Samuel Johnson, the great literary figure, lived in Eighteenth
Century London and used to spend a great deal of his time frequenting the coffee houses of the age, as not only were they frequented
by his friends, but they were also reasonable places to eat.
He had a cat named Hodge, whom he was extremely fond of, even to
the extent of feeding him oysters. Hodge would on occasion go to the coffee house with Dr. Sam where an extra saucer of coffee
was given to him. The cat became so attached to coffee that he would suffer from serious withdrawal if he did not have at least
one saucer of coffee per day to lap up.
When Hodge finally died of old age, Dr. Johnson had him stuffed, mounted and donated
to his favourite coffee house. Today if you go to
This coffee house is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Johnson and his beloved cat, Hodge.
Hodges Coffee House is a family-run restaurant that opened in October 2000. The emphasis of our business has always been wholesome
home-style cooking served in a relaxing and friendly environment. The mother and son team of Alison and Donald Clark has strived to
maintain a menu that offers excellent variety yet still caters for simple tastes. We have placed an absolute premium on service and
constantly try to instill the importance of this in our staff. Many of our patrons over the years have become our friends and we like
to think that they see Hodges as their home-from-home where they know what they are getting and we know what they want. If we can
make it, you can order it...
